Let's not deny we have our favourite cockails, our go-tos, our staples. You may be like many others who have assisted the Old Fashioned in taking out the top spot for most commonly ordered cocktail, or maybe a glass of bubbles takes your fancy. There's been an increase in gin appreciation & consumption by 50% in the past 5 years & growth is expected to continue both in Australia & globally. Who here has tried the South American national drink, Pisco? Who's dabbled with a DIY smoked cocktail creation? Who wants to try a healthier, gut-loving cocktail? Let's make 2019 the year to branch out & appreciate some of the amazingly creative, fresh & firey flavoured beverages behind the bar & in our kitchens.

1. THE NEW OLD FASHIONED

Old Fashioned cocktail recipe, best cocktails of 2019, by And Molotov

It's easy to see why this cocktail has been listed as the world's best seller for the past 4 years. It's the perfect balance of smooth whiskey, sour bitters & a crisp, citrus, tang. With it's name dating back to a Kentucky Gentleman's Club in the 1800's, you may question our motives to alter the way this loved beverage is served. However, the aromas produced by smoking a cocktail, enhance what we already know and love, expanding our sipping experience to a full sensory one. The richness of an And Molotov Red Wine smoke infusion adds another layer of flavour to this tasty creation, sending it down the hatch but also up the schnoz. Will 2019 be the year for this smoky Old Fashioned creation?

2. AVIATION

Aviation cocktail recipe, best cocktails of 2019, by And Molotov

Feel like the complete leather jacket wearing, F35 pilot with this beverage in hand. Well, it's kinda purple in colour & served in a coupe glass. Ok maybe it's not the dangerous, death-defiying beverage of aviators, but it's certainly one to try in 2019. Believe it or not, the Aviation was the most searched cocktail on the internet in 2013. Containing 20 different botanicals such as Gum Leaf, Pepperberry, Wattleseed & of course Juniper, South Australia's Applewood Distillery Gin took front position as our choice for the hero ingredient in this cocktail. So, now for the important parts - bottoms up & bombs away!

  • 60ml Applewood Distillery Gin
  • 15ml Maraschino Liqueur
  • 7.5ml Crème de violette
  • 15ml Lemon juice
  • Brandied cherry to garnish

METHOD

  • Shake gin, Maraschino Liqueur, Crème de violette, lemon juice & ice in a shaker

3. PISCO SOUR

Pisco Cocktail cocktail recipe, best cocktails of 2019, by And Molotov

All the way from our South American Amigos, we bring you the national drink of Peru & Chile. As the name suggests, this refreshing cocktail showcases Pisco, a brandy based spirit produced in wine making regions. It's made from certain grape varieties which are fermented into wine & then distilled, not-surprisingly, this means it smells a bit like wine & tastes a bit like grapes. We see this cocktail climbing the ranks in 2019 with the option of replacing egg whites with aguqfaba (the water found in chickpea tins which can be whisked just like eggs), a great vegan alternative meaning everyone can enjoy a Pisco Sour, ¡salud!

INGREDIENTS

  • 60ml Pisco
  • 30ml Lime juice
  • 20ml Sugar syrup
  • 1 Egg white
  • 1 Dash of bitters

METHOD

  • Dry shake egg white in shaker
  • Add pisco, lime juice, sugar syrup & ice to shaker, shake
  • Strain into a chilled rock glass
  • Garnish with a dash of bitters

4. OLD PAL

Old Pal cocktail recipe, best cocktails of 2019, by And Molotov

In honor of the punchy Negroni, the first loser & the world's second favourite cocktail, the Old Pal is an intriguing alternative. As a dryer version, an Old Pal is a mix of equal parts spirit, bitters and vermouth. Our friends at the The Cocktail Shop offer a ready-to-go cocktail kit & have partnered with 3 Australian artisan producers for some 'down-under' inspiration. Made with uniquely Australian ingredients, The Cocktail Shop Old Pal is preferred by some of Australia's best bartenders.

METHOD

  • Stir whiskey, dry vermonth, Apertive & ice in mixing glass
  • Strain into an ice-filled glass, rock or coupe

Let's not reserve our favourite bubbly for New Year's Eve or a cheers to mates tying the knot. Pull out those bottles you've been saving for a big celebration, it's time to spice things up a bit & transform a simple glass into an elegant, luscious bubbly cocktail. We do this with the help of pretty little hibiscus flowers in syrup from the guys at Wild Hibiscus Flowers Co, also available at liquor stores & supermarkets. The dainty flowers are entirely edible & taste like a cross between raspberries & rhubarb. This may be one of the easiest cocktails to throw together, no mixing glass or bartender skills required, & only 2 ingredients. Looking for an alcohol-free version? Swap the bubbly for sparking water or lemonade for a sophisticated mocktail. Cheers to the happy couple & cheers to our new bubbly cocktails!

7. BOULEVARDIER

Boulevardier cocktail recipe, best cocktails of 2019, by And Molotov

Negroni's are a fantastic warm weather cocktail, but when we swap out the gin for a warm, smooth bourbon, we're left with the perfect autumn & winter drink - I give you the Boulevardier! Let's not get confused, this is not a Negroni, but more appropriately considered as a seasonal cousin. Where the Negroni is crisp & lean, the Boulevardier is rich & intriguing, actually predating the former listed relative. Historical roots for this cocktail trace back to the French literary magazine titled Boulevardier, from the early 1900's, described as best "read before, between & after cocktails". We're looking forward to seeing this cocktail sneak in though the backdoor of more local speakeasies in 2019.

  • 20ml Bourbon
  • 20ml Campari
  • 20ml Sweet Vermouth
  • Orange peel to garnish
  • Ice

METHOD

  • Stir bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth & ice in mixing glass
  • Strain into an ice-filled glass, rock or coupe
  • Garnish with an orange peel

For all the whiskey lovers out there, you definitely need to try a Manhattan at least once in your life. This whiskey classic has floated in & out of fashion over the years before settling down on the craft cocktail menu.
